Islamorada Backcountry Trips

A backcountry fishing charter in Islamorada offers a versatile and personalized experience, exploring the calm, protected waters of Florida Bay and Everglades National Park. These trips target a wide variety of inshore species such as snook, redfish, tarpon, mangrove snapper, seatrout, and even the occasional permit or bonefish. The beauty of backcountry fishing lies in its flexibility, whether your group wants to focus on sight-fishing the flats, working the mangroves, or drifting channels for a mix of action, the day can be tailored to your interests and skill level. Calm, shallow waters make these trips perfect for families, beginners, and seasoned anglers alike.

We use years of local knowledge to adapt the plan to the day’s conditions, ensuring you’re always fishing the most productive areas. Our ability to adjust based on weather, tides, and what’s biting means no two trips are ever exactly the same. Whether the goal is to chase a trophy fish, fill the cooler with fresh snapper, or simply enjoy a scenic day on the water catching whatever bites while seeing dolphins and tropical birdlife, a backcountry charter in Islamorada delivers a safe, comfortable, and rewarding adventure.

Target Species

Winter:
Cooler water temperatures in winter bring excellent action for species like speckled seatrout, Spanish mackerel, bluefish, and pompano in the open bays. In the mangroves and channels, redfish and mangrove snapper become reliable targets. While tarpon are less active, smaller resident fish can still be caught in deeper channels. Clear water and lower boat traffic also make for some great sight-fishing for bonefish on sunny days.

Spring:
Spring marks a major transition as water warms and migratory fish begin arriving. Tarpon fishing kicks into high gear, with peak migration starting in late April. Snook and redfish become more active on the flats and along mangrove edges, while bonefish feed aggressively in the warming shallows. This is also a prime time for mixed-bag trips, as conditions are ideal for targeting multiple species in a single outing.

Summer:
Summer offers some of the most consistent backcountry fishing of the year. Tarpon remain a prime target early in the season, while snook, redfish, and mangrove snapper provide steady action all summer long. Warm water also brings strong opportunities for shark fishing in the backcountry, especially for lemon and blacktip sharks. Morning trips are often best to avoid midday heat and summer thunderstorms.

Fall:
Fall brings cooling water and a return of baitfish schools to the backcountry, which attracts predators. Snook and redfish feed heavily in preparation for winter, and bonefish are abundant on the flats during calm, clear days. While tarpon activity tapers off compared to spring and summer, smaller resident fish can still be targeted in protected channels. This season is also known for light crowds, pleasant weather, and excellent all-around fishing variety.

Where We Fish

On a backcountry fishing charter in Islamorada, we cover an incredible range of water, running throughout Florida Bay and deep into Everglades National Park in search of the best bite. No two trips are exactly the same, we’re constantly adjusting our route based on tides, weather, and fish activity. On some days, we may fish the nearby flats and mangrove shorelines, while on others we’ll make longer runs to remote creeks, channels, and basins few anglers ever see.

On a full-day charter, it’s not uncommon for us to travel to remote areas of the national park for a pristine and remote experience teeming with snook, redfish, tarpon, and a variety of other gamefish. This ability to cover so much ground ensures that every trip is a unique adventure, tailored to maximize your fishing opportunities.
